WHO AM I

Hello, I’m Lim Shyang Guey (just call me SG), born in Penang and I am 66 years old. I will be embarking on a run of a lifetime – one driven by love, loss, and a deep desire to make a difference.

My wife Joo Lee and I had planned to someday travel on foot around Peninsula Malaysia. Unfortunately, we never did get to share this adventure together as she passed away in August 2024 from cancer at age 63. I decided to complete this journey by running solo, this time with a renewed purpose: to promote cancer awareness and raise funds for children with cancer.

THE MISSION

I will run 2,200 km around Peninsula Malaysia, passing through all 11 states and federal territories, over approximately 90 days. Every step I take is dedicated to supporting the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) and children fighting cancer.

This journey – “Run for Gold” – is about pushing oneself to be your very best while supporting children in their fight against cancer. Gold Ribbon is the universal symbol for childhood cancer awareness, representing the preciousness of children and symbolizing the courage, strength, and resilience of those affected by cancer.

WHY IT MATTERS

No child should have to face cancer alone. Having been through the journey as a caregiver myself and being around cancer patients, I understand the emotional, physical, and financial toll cancer places on them. That’s why every kilometre I run is dedicated to easing the painful journeys of young cancer patients and their families

THE PLAN

I intend to run 25-35 km daily with rest days in between, staying preferably at homestays with host or shared accommodations. This will allow me to share my messages and hear stories from others about their cancer experience. When stopping at major towns we will hold events in collaboration with local communities, the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM), its supporters, caregivers and survivors. Given the expected daily distances, I anticipate completing the journey in around 90 days.

I will begin my run on 28 March 2026 from the NCSM-MPPP Home of Hope at Rose Avenue in Penang at 10:00am and will be welcomed back before 22 June when I turn 67.
